It is reported to have been sighted by many people in various countries throughout the world. It is also reported to have appeared recently in the sky of Seoul. It has become a very attractive subject for books, movies, and TV programs. Believe it or not, it has penetrated our imagination, and has become quite a familiar word in our daily conversation. But the only problem with it is that the eyewitnesses of this unidentified or unidentifiable flying object, better known as UFO, like the people who insist to have seen the ghost, cannot convince all of us so well of that adrenalin-pumping or the blood-curdling experience they might have undergone when they encountered it.
The UFO story originates in the simple but strong presumption that there must be some sentient beings living in other stars - something or somebody like human beings of the earth -but far superior in every way. We want to imagine that we are not the only living creatures in the vast universe. We wish the old story for the children to be true that there are rabbits on the moon that pound grain into flour for rice-cakes on a certain particular day of the year. What a disappointment it was when the first man on the moon sent the clear message that there was not a life on the moon, let alone the rabbits!
As far as we know, the other planets in the solar system, except the earth, do not show any evidence of life on them any more than the moon does. Then we have to look far beyond the solar system for the home of UFOs, where we cannot reach with our present level of technology. The fact that we cannot reach them, but that they can reach us with ease testifies the undeniable fact that they outdo us by far in their technology as well as in their intelligence. Collectively we feel powerless before them.
What a terrible disaster it is, if the intention of the UFOs, with their far-advanced technology and far-superior intelligence, would be nothing less than the destruction or the conquest of our planet? Of course we can mobilize all our equally sophisticated and awesome weapons to fight them, but we know that we cannot beat them. How can we beat or fight anything or anyone when we cannot even identify the thing itself - what it is, where it comes from, and what for?
Some victims of the UFOs have already been reported. They are either airplane pilots who have lost their lives in the chase of these mysterious objects, or those who have been kidnaped by the aliens from outer space for their unknown purposes. None of those kidnaped has ever returned and told the whole story, but we can guess that these men from the other stars are making some very important experiments with the earth-men. We are nothing but a guinea pig for them, to our great humiliation.
However, there is no reason for us to be always so pessimistic and depressed about the advent of the UFOs. Suppose they come for the peace of the earth. It is not difficult to surmise that they, with their far better knowledge and wisdom, could have watched us going to mutual destruction by the nuclear war, for example. From their home somewhere far above and far away they surely could have observed us building blindly the huge arsenals for deadly weapons and destructive arms. They also would have discerned that enmity and animosity growing among nations day by day, and felt pity for us with their equally advanced capacity of humanitarian sympathy and compassion, and decided to send a missionary to rescue us from total destruction.
One of the traditional methods employed by the missionaries of old or new, terrestrial or celestial, is to give early warning of the coming disaster: the end of the world. Would or could any leaders of people on the earth, bad or good, adamantly insist on going their own way, as they had done hitherto before, if they met personally with this missionary of the outer world and listened to their admonitions? I think they would buckle under the entreaties of these extra-terrestrials, at least. If not, this special envoy would threaten, with their almighty power, to replace the incumbent heads of the nations with better persons for the sake of the entire mankind.
We can also think of the possibility of going into war with these space-men, if they mean to conquer and put us under their rule. So much the better. All the nations, big or small, would be united for the defense of our planet against the aggression. For the first time in the history of mankind since Adam's fall, the wars on the face of the earth would cease for the time being, and all the deadly warheads would zero in on the targets somewhere in the space, not on those across the national borders. The sad irony is that only the war, bigger and more deadly one, can put even a temporary stop to the ever-continuing wars on the earth.
There is nothing to lose in the belief that the UFO does exist. Its existence extends our imagination beyond the limit of our banal everyday life, and inhabits the seemingly insipid and mechanical universe with the mysterious and wondrous presence. How drab and dreary it would be if those innumerable bodies in the sky, shining and twinkling at night, are nothing but rocks and stones, and sands stretched endlessly with not a flower or a blade of grass!
The presence of the UFO itself is very educational. It is a very fresh reminder that we still live in puzzlement of nature, the universe, and ourselves, although we are sending man into the space. Our overweening vanity of knowledge shatters into the pieces of ignorance the moment we realize and admit the fact that there is still something flying in the sky we cannot even identify. We learn humility and modesty from the incomprehensible and the inconceivable.

For man to create myths is one of the most valuable and blessed endowments with which he makes the harsh realities malleable and endurable. In some sense, UFO plays the role of a traditional deity. It even has all the necessary attributes of the almighty and the omnipotent. It is known to travel far and faster even than the light of the sun. Sooner or later the true nature of UFO will be verified, like the rabbits on the moon. Nevertheless, there will be another UFO in the universe. If not, man will create one, because man needs it.
